We suggest that sensucht can be considered a formal typology, and is identifiable as such in the spontaneous decay of architecture from futurism directly to anachronism. From the potential morphology of tomorrow that has either fallen out of favor, out of fashion, or out of plausibility—to those affects of the Western canon which have been labeled stylistic or are otherwise ostracized by postmodern sophistry. Hovercrafts, jetpacks, the Supersurface [1], Bond gadgets, mechanized libraries [2], terminator technology, apocalyptic or utopian analogues [3]. Dreams sublimated into memories.

 

By carefully conflating these two ideas we might touch upon the reawakening of an esoteric mannerism: anachronism becomes the mode by which the architect copes with the absurd. So it was that Piranesi’s Veduta di Roma series painted an image of Rome so fantastical that Geothe himself—an admirer of Piranesi’s work—exclaimed his consuming disappointment upon first visiting the city, for it was less impressive than Piranesi’s images had lead him to imagine [4]. Until the apologetic sacrifice that punctuates Flusser’s feast has taken place [5]; until the inhuman vitality of an inarticulable idea wets the formless altar unmade by the hands any architect or analyzed by any linguist or put under glass by any salesman or peddled to a crowd of jerk-lipped and desperate indigents pressed shoulder to shoulder crowing and blinking and craning their necks to get a better view of a small screen too far away to see clearly whereon an awful film romanticizes the willful abandonment of their own privacy orchestrated by some proselyting artist who would be more at home grifting on a street corner; until the things we cannot speak about are finally passed over in silence [6], we will desperately indulge poetic inanity. 

 

There can be no construction on the absurd slope of an irrational mountain with stones that do not belong to gravity. Asleep and dreaming, we offer sensucht in place of an architectural method.
